Open-Ended and Closed-Ended Questions

Closed-Ended questions can be answered with a “yes,” “no,” or a short response. Open-Ended questions require a more thoughtful response.

Open-Ended Questions require a more extended and thoughtful response.

Closed-Ended Questions can be answered with a simple “yes,” “no,” or a short 1-2 word response.

For example, if you asked, “Do you like pizza?” The interviewee will more than likely say “Yes” or “No” to this closed-ended question. But if you ask, “What do you like about pizza?” the open-ended question will prompt them to give you details about what they like (or don’t like) about pizza.
