Room Tone is the quiet, subtle sound of a location or space. Depending on how the audio was recorded on set, cutting from one shot to another can sound different due to shifting ambiance. Room tone should be recorded at every location during production for one minute with only the natural sound of the location (all people in that location are politely asked to be quiet when room tone is being recorded.) At least 60 seconds of room tone should be recorded from every location during production.

The editor can use this audio track to smooth out the different ambiences between cuts, allowing for audio continuity.
